• To enhance the pupils' insight into the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea region and to give them an understanding of the scientific, social and cultural aspects of the interaction between humans and the environment
• To develop pupils' ability to study the changes in the environment and to encourage their participation in the development of a sustainable future

The activities and methods used to reach these objectives are 

• To develop the co-operation between schools, teachers and educational institutions in the Baltic Sea region
• To develop, and with on-going work between the schools, refine teaching and educational programmes for international environmental studies and sustainable development.
• To organise common activities and arrangements and to pass on our findings to others

This project was promoted by the Finns in 1988 and the work was initiated in 1989. In every country there is a national BSP co-ordinator, and the international co-ordination rotates between the participating countries.

The subject matter and co-operation in the Baltic Sea Project has the following 7 themes or programmes as a starting point:

The quality of the water in the Baltic Sea region

The quality of the air in the Baltic Sea region

Watercourse in the Baltic Sea region 

Birds and ecology in the Baltic Sea region

Phenological studies 

Nature Watch

The many activities in BSP are described and documented continuously in the Baltic Sea Project Newsletter which is published twice a year.
In addition to this the schools and teachers have co-operated in the development, trial and publishing of no less than 5 books covering the themes of the project.

The last publication was in June 2003, the BSP Learners' Guide No. 5: "Baltic 21. An Agenda 21 for the Baltic Sea Region. Education for Sustainable Development." The material has been compiled and edited by Birthe Zimmermann, Amtsgymnasiet (County High School) in Sønderborg and published with the support of the Ministry of Education in Denmark. A sample of the book can be ordered free of charge by sending a stamp-addressed envelope (28 kroner) labelled UNESCO ASP - Baltic 21.
