Cultural Values in Different Countries
Margit Hansen, Vesthimmerlands Gymnasium og HF

The project was directed by The EuroMed School Forum in Vienna who is trying to establish an intercultural dialogue among advanced pupils in various countries. The aim of the project was:

• To create mutual respect and understanding
• To exchange educational approaches to politics, human rights and cultural education
• To encourage learning and the development of qualifications and skills which enable an active participation in a dialogue among different cultures.

The participating countries were:

• Austria, Hungary, Jordan, Lebanon, The Netherlands, Turkey, Israel, Denmark

Values at stake
The project about cultural values consisted of various exercises and assignments, and each school sent the results to Vienna where the papers were compiled and evaluated. First the students had to give priority to 3 values from a given list of values and also argue for their priorities. Next they had to find pictures matching their top priorities, and finally they were to write personal poems, acrostics, and various kinds of texts about one of the chosen pictures. (Some of the pictures can be seen at the top of this paper).
EuroMed produced diagrams of the results to make it possible to compare the individual schools. 17 schools in all took part in the project, so obviously the answers from the schools cannot be seen as fully representative of their respective countries. However, at the various schools the results formed an interesting basis for discussion about similarities and differences in values.
It may be concluded that values such as true friendship and freedom are top scorers in the joint result for all the schools. Apart from that An exciting life, Having a meaningful job, A world at peace, Family unity and security and Equality are high-ranking values.
But the priorities at the individual schools vary to quite a big extent.

This year we hope to be able to continue our intercultural cooperation in a new EuroMed project in which representatives of the participating countries are to meet personally. Intercultural cooperation seems to be a rather slow, but at the same time very exciting and necessary process.
